How Are Sawdust Briquettes Made?

Sawdust is a common byproduct of wood processing. The conventional method of disposal involves burning the sawdust, which is not only limited in its approach but also contributes to environmental pollution, failing to fully utilise its potential value. In fact, transforming sawdust into charcoal briquettes can simultaneously address both waste management and energy shortages. How are sawdust charcoal briquettes produced? Depending on the processing method used to convert sawdust into charcoal, the process can be categorised into two distinct techniques: briquetting followed by carboniszation, and carbonization followed by briquetting. and carbonization followed by briquetting.

Raw Material Screening

The collected sawdust is screened using a vibrating screen or a drum screen to separate other impurities from the sawdust, ensuring its purity and improving the quality of the finished sawdust sticks.

Sawdust Drying

Sawdust requires pre-treatment drying. Typically, an airflow dryer or drum dryer is used. The moisture content in the sawdust must be strictly controlled below 12%. If the sawdust is too wet, a dryer must be used to dry it to the required moisture content. This will improve the moulding effect and will not affect subsequent moulding carbonization.

Sawdust Briquetting

After drying, the sawdust is compressed into sawdust briquettes using a sawdust briquetting machine under high temperature and pressure. At this point, the sawdust charcoal briquettes are raw. Further carbonisZzation treatment is required. Sawdust contains lignin, which naturally forms under high temperature and pressure. The compressed wood rods can be used as fuel or carbonised for use as barbecue charcoal.

After being formed into blocks, the sawdust charcoal rods are carbonised using a horizontal carbonization furnace. After cooling, the finished sawdust charcoal rods are removed.

Raw Material Processing

If it is only sawdust without large pieces of waste material, it can be directly carbonised. If there are many large pieces of waste material, a shredder must be used to grind them. First, wood waste of different sizes is shredded into sawdust. Then, a screen is used to remove impurities from the sawdust.

Sawdust Drying

First, check the moisture content of the sawdust. In some wood furniture processing plants, the sawdust is typically dry, with little moisture content, and can be directly carbonised using a carboniszation furnace. However, in some wood panel processing plants, the sawdust produced from wet logs has a high moisture content. In such cases, the sawdust must be naturally sun-dried or dried using a drum dryer before carbonization.

Sawdust Carbonization

The dried sawdust can be fed into a continuous carbonization furnace via a feeder. The sawdust takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete the carbonization process and turn into charcoal powder. After carbonization, the sawdust enters a cooling machine for rapid cooling. The cooled material is then discharged via a conveying system. The entire continuous carbonization furnace operates continuously, with feeding and charcoal discharge occurring simultaneously.

Binder Mixing

The carbonised sawdust is then crushed using a binder mixer. At the same time, an appropriate amount of water and binder is added and thoroughly mixed.

Sawdust Charcoal Powder Moulding

The charcoal powder is compressed into coal balls of a certain shape using a charcoal powder briquetting machine. There are many types of moulding equipment available, including charcoal briquetting machines, water pipe coal briquetting machines, and honeycomb coal briquetting machines. The appropriate moulding equipment can be selected based on customer requirements.

The formed sawdust charcoal briquettes are dried through natural sun drying or in a drying chamber. The moisture in the sawdust charcoal blocks is completely evaporated. The final product is the finished sawdust charcoal briquettes.
