What Is The Process of Carbonization Of Coconut Chells?

2025-08-07

Coconut shells are a common agricultural waste product. They possess a unique fibre structure and chemical composition, making them an ideal raw material for processing into coconut shell charcoal. In the coconut shell carbonization process, the continuous carbonization furnace plays a crucial role. Today, Victor Machinery will provide a detailed introduction to the application of continuous carbonization furnaces in coconut shell carbonization.

What Is The Coconut Shell Carbonization Process?

Coconut shell carbonization refers to the process of pyrolysing and carbonising coconut shells under high-temperature, oxygen-free conditions to convert them into coconut shell charcoal with a high carbon content. The entire coconut shell carbonization process includes multiple steps such as raw material preparation, carbonization reaction, cooling, and sorting. Through the carbonization process, the physical and chemical properties of coconut shells undergo significant changes.

Coconut Shell Pre-treatment

First, coconut shells are collected uniformly. They are then further cleaned using professional cleaning equipment. This is followed by pre-treatment steps such as removing the outer husk and cutting.

The carbonization furnace is divided into three stages: drying, carbonization , and cooling. First, the raw materials are sent to the coconut shell carbonization furnace. The coconut shells are further dried to remove moisture. This facilitates subsequent carbonization processing. When the furnace temperature reaches 500–600°C, the thermal decomposition stage begins, converting the organic matter in the coconut shells into solid carbon through thermal decomposition. Simultaneously, gases and liquids are released. Recyclable combustible gases: The entire process employs a unique dry distillation carbonization technology. This enables efficient utilisation of combustible gases such as carbon monoxide, methane, and hydrogen produced during the carbonization process. These gases are then purified through a flue gas purification system, separating wood acid liquid and wood tar, thereby obtaining pure combustible gases. The combustible gases are then fully combusted through a custom-designed burner to provide heat for the high-temperature carbonization pipeline.

The solid carbon is then cooled through a cooling device, reducing the surface temperature of the carbon to 50-60°C. It is then discharged through a cooler, completing the collection of finished charcoal.

Process Characteristics Of The Coconut Shell Carbonization Furnace

As a continuous carbonization equipment, the coconut shell carbonization furnace has unique process characteristics and advantages. It adopts a drum-type continuous rotation design to ensure uniform heating of raw materials inside the furnace, thereby achieving efficient carbonization reactions. The continuous carbonization furnace employs sealing technology and a heat recovery system, which reduces environmental pollution and lowers energy consumption. Additionally, the entire carboniZation furnace system is equipped with a PLC automated control system, enabling fully automated operation and reducing labour costs.
