How Do You Make Wood Charcoal?

2025-07-18

Charcoal is made from the pyrolysis of wood in air-isolated conditions. Due to the lack of oxygen, the wood does not burn completely. After releasing water vapour and volatile organic gases, charcoal is formed, retaining the charcoal element. Charcoal making machine is an important equipment to make charcoal from wood. So, how to make charcoal? What is the production process of charcoal?

Diversified Utilisation of Raw Materials

In addition to logs (oak, birch, etc.), it can process agricultural and forestry wastes, bamboo product wastes, furniture factory trimmings, fruit wood (apple wood, date wood, etc.), fruit shells, coconut shells, and other lignin materials.

Pre-treatment Of Raw Materials

Wood raw materials need to be crushed to 3-5mm granularity using a crusher. Fibrous materials such as rice husk also need to control the moisture content of 12% or less. Experiments have proved that pine wood chips and peanut shells can be mixed in accordance with 7:3 to improve the combustion value of the finished charcoal, while the charcoal made of pure bamboo chips is harder.

Drying And Moulding Key Process

The dryer adopts advanced production process. The new drying equipment adopts three-layer drum structure. The temperature gradient gradually rises from 90℃ to 120℃. It makes the moisture content in the raw material drop from 30% to 8%. The wood chip briquetting machine is then compressed into charcoal sticks by high temperature and high pressure. The forming machine softens the lignin at a high temperature of 320°C and extrudes hexagonal charcoal rods under high pressure of 1.8MPa. The finished charcoal sticks are made with a mirror-like luster on the cross-section, and they are ready when they are put into water.

Intelligent Pyrolytic Carbonisation

The carbonisation furnace adopts a double-layer furnace structure, with the outer combustion chamber providing the heat source and the inner material being heated indirectly by heat conduction. The temperature gradient is controlled in three stages: 200-300°C dehydration and drying stage, 350-450°C pyrolysis and gas production stage, and over 500°C deep carbonisation stage. The micro-negative pressure environment is maintained by adjusting the air inlet and flue gate. Built-in sensors detect the volatile content in real time and automatically mediate the air intake. The carbonisation furnace adopts PLC control system to accurately regulate the temperature rise curve, and the carbonisation cycle can be shortened to less than 24 hours.

Waste Heat Recovery And Environmental Protection Treatment

The combustible gases generated during the carbonisation process are separated by condensation. Wood vinegar liquid, wood tar and other by-products are collected separately, and the remaining gas is returned to the fuel chamber as fuel. The cooling system uses water service spraying to reduce the charcoal to below 80°C within 30 minutes. The waste gas produced is purified by smoke purification system.
