What Is The Process Of Charcoal Making?

2025-08-08

There are many methods for producing charcoal, including traditional methods, modern methods, and some innovative approaches. Charcoal is a common material used for barbecuing, heating, and filtration. It is produced by converting wood into a high-carbon fuel. Charcoal has several advantages, including higher calorific value, longer burning time, and environmental friendliness. It can be used as barbecue fuel, boiler energy, and achieves both environmental and economic benefits. So, what is the process of producing charcoal from wood?

Wood cCarbonization Process

Horizontal Carbonization Furnace

This type of carbonization furnace is commonly used in small-scale charcoal production facilities. It offers cost-effective advantages. The horizontal carbonization furnace subjects raw wood to high-temperature carbonization processing. Wood is efficiently converted into charcoal. Through heating, it is decomposed into combustible gases and solid carbon. The generated gases contain a large amount of combustible substances, such as methane and hydrogen. The combustible gases can be recycled back to the combustion chamber at the bottom of the furnace for heating. Horizontal carbonization furnaces are commonly used for carbonising large or irregularly shaped wood.

Continuous carbonization furnace

Continuous carbonization furnaces are primarily used for carbonising small-particle materials such as rice husks, fruit shells, walnut shells, sawdust, and wood chips. They enable continuous feeding and discharging. Continuous carbonization furnaces are suitable for large-scale charcoal processing plants.

Charcoal Grinding And Mixing

Grinding And Mixing With Adhesive

After carbonization, the charcoal is ground into powder form. The fineness of the charcoal powder aids in subsequent moulding processes and reduces machine wear.

Mixing Charcoal Powder With Water

Since charcoal powder lacks viscosity, an appropriate amount of adhesive is added to help form the charcoal powder into charcoal blocks. Common adhesives include food-grade adhesives, corn starch, and cassava starch. These not only enhance the strength of the charcoal blocks but also improve the smoothness of their surfaces. The adhesive addition ratio is typically 3–5%. Additionally, the moisture content of the mixed charcoal is controlled within the range of 20–25%, which facilitates subsequent charcoal block moulding.

Charcoal Block Moulding and Drying

Charcoal Briquette Machine

After thoroughly mixing charcoal powder and adhesive, the mixture is compressed into briquettes using a charcoal briquette machine under high temperature and pressure. Depending on your requirements, you can choose from various types of briquette equipment. Charcoal briquettes can be produced in different shapes, such as square, barbecue charcoal sticks, round, hexagonal prisms, square prisms, spherical, and pillow-shaped charcoal briquettes. After being formed by the briquette machine, the charcoal briquettes typically have a certain level of moisture.

Finished Charcoal Drying

The charcoal drying chamber is a specialized device for drying charcoal briquettes. It uses high-temperature airflow to rapidly cool the briquettes. The entire drying process is highly automated. The drying chamber is equipped with 3–4 layers or more of mesh bags to ensure uniform drying of the charcoal. The hot airflow continuously removes moisture from the charcoal blocks, achieving efficient drying results. Natural air-drying is simpler; simply place the charcoal blocks on trays, avoiding direct contact with other impurities. Typically, natural drying takes approximately 4-7 days to ensure the charcoal blocks are completely dry.
